The Montana A Cappella Society in Washington, D.C.
In December 2008, Society members traveled to Washington, D.C. to proudly represent Montana by performing live at special events and for the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree lighting ceremony. Jack Gladstone’s ballad for the tree, Heart of Montana, became the theme song for this historic occasion and it was the Society’s privilege to join him musically. The singers were recently invited by the Montana Legislature for an encore performance with Jack at the State Capitol in Helena, MT.

With sincere gratitude to the Forest Service and to our many contributors for their enthusiastic participation and generosity in helping us achieve our financial goal, the Montana A Cappella Society presented a Holiday Thank-You Concert for the community.

This remarkable vocal ensemble from the Bitterroot Valley of Western Montana has received wide audience acclaim since 2003. The Society performs regionally, promoting awareness and appreciation of the art of a cappella singing through live performance, recordings and educational programs in schools.

Under the direction of Artistic Director Don Matlock, these all volunteer, non-professional singers create their own unique blend and signature sound. The Director encourages the group to sing with “one voice” and to tell a story with the music. Typical selections range from Renaissance madrigals to vocal jazz, classic love songs, patriotic, folk tunes and toe-tapping gospel, with many new arrangements and challenging music styles.

The chorus demonstrates its musical versatility in concert, for private bookings and community service events, as guest artists at music festivals, and as invited performers to the Great Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco, an internationally renowned holiday production. Their recent Washington, D.C. trip included performances for congressional members, at private receptions, the U.S. Botanic Garden, and Arlington House.

Celebrating the holiday season in replica 1800s period costumes, the Society delights audiences with a diverse repertoire of both secular and sacred music spanning eight centuries, multiple cultures and languages. The season culminates with a special appearance at First Night Missoula on New Year’s Eve.

In their debut album titled Christmasse Comes but Once a Year, the Montana A Cappella Society presents a distinctive collection of holiday music, resonating with this group’s characteristic sound and precision.

A second recording, Love is Here to Stay: 500 Years of Love Songs, is planned for 2009.
