Welcome to the Montana A Cappella Society

This remarkable vocal ensemble from the Bitterroot Valley of Western Montana has received wide audience acclaim since 2003. The Society performs regionally, promoting awareness and appreciation of the art of a cappella singing through live performance, recordings and educational programs in schools.

Under the direction of Artistic Director Don Matlock, these all volunteer, non-professional singers create their own unique blend and signature sound. The Director encourages the group to sing with “one voice” and to tell a story with the music. Typical selections range from Renaissance madrigals to vocal jazz, classic love songs, patriotic, folk tunes and toe-tapping gospel, with many new arrangements and challenging music styles.

The chorus demonstrates its versatility through performances in concert, for private bookings, community service and civic events, as guest artists at music festivals and as invited performers to the Great Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco, an internationally renowned holiday production.

Celebrating the holiday season with performances in replica 1800’s period costumes, the Society delights audiences with a diverse repertoire of both secular and sacred music spanning eight centuries, multiple cultures and languages. For the second year, the season will culminate with a special appearance at First Night Missoula on New Year’s Eve.

In their debut album titled Christmasse Comes but Once a Year, the Montana A Cappella Society presents a distinctive collection of holiday music, resonating with this group’s characteristic sound and precision.

An Exciting Opportunity–
The Montana A Cappella Society is invited to Washington!

Each Holiday season brings with it a sense of deep tradition, good will and generosity among people. The tradition of placing the United States Capitol Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C. began in 1964 and since 1970, the “people’s tree” has been provided by our U.S. National Forests.

In 2008, the state of Montana and the Bitterroot National Forest will provide the tree. We have an exciting opportunity to showcase what is so special about Montana—the beauty of our state, the richness of her many cultures, the talents and generosity of her people.

In early December this year, our nation’s Christmas tree will be raised on the U.S. Capitol front lawn. The Speaker of the House and Congress will host the annual lighting ceremony and 10,000 lights will illuminate the tree throughout the Holiday season.

The Montana A Cappella Society has been invited to perform on this historic occasion for the tree lighting ceremony and at special receptions hosted by congressional members and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Partnership members, key sponsors, community leaders and Montana’s Governor will participate and attend these events.

Montana will provide:
• Selection, coordination and transportation of a 60-foot tree for the U.S. Capitol
• Distribution of 70+ companion trees for congressional offices and government agencies
• Over 5,000 high-visibility handmade ornaments to decorate the tree

To ensure this project is a success for the nation and for Montana, a statewide celebration is planned, promising to leave a lasting impression on all those who become involved. A wealth of partnership and volunteer opportunities are available. We need the support and enthusiasm of all Montanans!
